Wondering what to use in lining the bottom of your glider's cage? Do you know which products are toxic to sugar gliders? The following guidelines have been adopted from Habitat: Cage Bedding/Litter Rules posted on www.sugargliders.org
NO Pine or Cedar shavings
Sugar gliders may experience respiratory problems from the oils produced by pine and cedar shavings. Even the bedding products sold in pet stores may be dangerous for your sugar glider.
NO Chlorophyll or Cat Litter Digesting the product or inhaling its fumes can make sugar gliders sick, and can potentially be fatal.
NO Newspaper If your newspaper is printed with non-colored ink made from a vegetable dye, it MAY be safe. However, if you have any question about its origin or dye content, you are advised to avoid its use in your sugar glider's cage.
NO Corncob Bedding Although it is non-toxic, it is prone to bacterial growth which can be dangerous for your sugar glider.
NO Generic Eucalyptus Bedding There are a variety of eucalyptus available. You can find it in many hardware stores in the gardening department. But don't buy it! Unfortunately, some types of eucalyptus can be toxic to sugar gliders. Unless you know the exact source of the eucalyptus, and the chemicals used to treat it, you probably want to avoid using it in your sugar glider's cage.
What's Safe?
We recommend ink-free papertowels or puppy training pads. For bedding, use natural cotton or coconut fibres, color-fast fabrics, or papers that are color-free or have been colored only with vegetable or soy dyes. We offer a safe eucalyptus bedding in our catalog. We also offer a vegetable-based color paper bedding that is safe.
