Recipes for Health

There are several versions of the Ledbeaters Mix recipe circulating throughout the sugar glider community. And new modifications are constantly being made. Don't sweat it! Like sugar glider expert Dennis Kelsey-Wood states, feeding your glider is as much an art form as it is a science. So have fun with it! Consult your vet and do some research before you make any drastic changes. Experiment with your glider's favorite foods, and substitute different ingredients to suit your glider's taste. But do so in a manner which maintains nutritional balance. In other words, if your glider doesn't like carrots, but prefers green beans, then make that substitute. Likewise, if he/she prefers grapes to apples, then substitute sugar-free grape juice for the apple juice. Simply remember, when you make changes to the recipe, be sure to keep a healthy balance. Here are a couple of modified Ledbeaters recipes. Want to add your recipe to this page? Please email us your recipe to be added to this page. Feeding your sugar glider

Ledbeaters Mix #1
Blend the following ingredients together. Spoon into ice cube trays, cover with wax paper or plastic wrap, and freeze overnight. Each day, thaw an individual cube and serve. No fuss, no mess. What could be easier?

  • 1 jar (2 1/2 oz.) Baby Food Chicken or Turkey
  • 1/2 cup Apple Juice
  • 1/2 cup Honey
  • 1/2 cup High-Protein Baby Cereal
  • 1/4 cup Wheat Germ
  • 1/4 cup Baby Food Sweet Potato (or grated yams)
  • 1/4 cup Baby Food Carrots (or grated carrots)
  • 1 Egg - Hard Boiled and Shelled
  • 1 tsp. Reptocal Supplement (use Rep-Cal or equivalent if you prefer a phosphorus-free diet supplement)

Ledbeaters Mix #2
Puree the following ingredients together. Pour into a Tupperware-style bowl (or use ice cube trays, if you prefer) cover tightly and freeze. Scoop out enough for a meal as needed.

  • 1 jar (2 1/2 oz.) Baby Food Lamb
  • 1/2 cup Baby Apple Juice
  • 1/2 cup Honey
  • 3/4 cup Hi-Protein Baby Cereal
  • 1/4 cup Wheat Germ
  • 1/4 cup Baby Food corn
  • 1 Egg - Hard Boiled (with shell)
  • 1 tsp. vitamin supplement

Ledbeaters Mix #3 (Bourbon's version)
Blend the following as described above.

  • 1/2 cup Honey (Do not use honeycomb, raw honey, or unfiltered honey)
  • 1 Egg (hard boiled and shelled)
  • 1/4 cup of Apple Juice (Not frozen, Not concentrate)
  • 4oz bottle Gerber juice with yogurt (Mixed Fruit or Banana), or substitute by using 2oz of plain yogurt and 2oz of mixed fruit juice
  • 1 Teaspoon of Rep-Cal Herpivite vitamin supplement

Sugar Glider Mash
You can be extremely creative with a mash. This is a great way to disguise foods that your sugar glider normally rejects but really needs in his or her diet. The mash is a moist pudding consistency (not a liquid!) with all of the items mixed together so that your finicky eater will develop a new taste for some old staples.

This is not an exhaustive list of possibilities, but a few of the items that are commonly ignored when served a la cart. Using soaked bread crumbs as a base, add a combination of the following (or any other foodstuffs that work for you) finely chopped to make the mash moist. Add your sugar glider's favorites too (i.e., corn, carrots, peas) to make it more delicious:

  • chicken (remove the skin)
  • hamburger or sausage (cooked or raw)
  • white fish (boiled)
  • tomato
  • turnip
  • parsley
  • rice
  • cauliflower
  • celery

Sugar Glider Biscuit Monkey Chow Treat
It doesn't come any easier than this folks! Monkey chow can be an everyday staple in your sugar glider cage. It is nutritius and packed with protein and vitamins. Furthermore, since moist foods lend themselves to be easily sptrinkled with vitamin and mineral supplements, this is an effective way to treat your glider's dietary deficiencies.

  • soak one biscuit in fruit juice or glider nectar until biscuit is soft, then serve
  • Use sodium-free chicken or beef broth as an alternative to juice/nectar.
